‘Softness and strength are contrasts that attract me’

Monique Spapens (1967) was raised in an artistic family on the Veluwe in the Netherlands. Surrounded by nature and animals she was soon fascinated by, amongst others, horses. She attended the Vrije Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Nunspeet and became skilled in drawing, graphical techniques and then modeling and sculpting.
Her sculptures are expressions of abstract and realism. Nudes and animals are inspired by the movement and spontaneity of their stance and poses. She has a passion for sculpting horses and bulls. The power, but also the gentleness, these animals radiate moves her. Last year she also start making bronze jewellery, all unique pieces, here Minimo line.

She also enjoys painting; whereby the confrontation which occurs on canvas by the images of vague fragments of people and their surroundings, creates a mysticism which blurs the distinction between fiction and reality. Monique currently lives and works in Harderwijk.
